Winning run brought to an end in Cardiff

Caerau (Ely)  2 - 2  Garden Village

Welsh Football League Division 2
Saturday August 26th, 2006

Garden Village lost their 100% record but maintained their unbeaten run with a draw at Caerau (Ely).

The visitors got off to the perfect start by taking an 8th minute lead through Phil Myles, but Bob Lloyd's side had a host of chances which should have all but finished the match as a contest by half-time.

But all of those missed chances came back to haunt Village as the home side struck an equaliser just before the break through Matthew Mountstephen. They then took a 2-1 lead on 67 minutes courtesy of a well-struck James Cotteril effort but Jamie Evans levelled for Garden Village 8 minutes later.

The visitors made an explosive start to the game and could have gone one-up within the opening 60 seconds, after a good build up which started in the Village half and the end product was a strike from Rob Shannon which was well saved by 'keeper Ross Wilkinson.

But the Caerau shot-stopper wasn't so lucky shortly afterwards as he was beaten from close-range. Phil John played a defence splitting pass through to Phil Myles and Wilkinson was left stranded as he had options to his right in Rob Shannon and Steven Evans, but the forward decided to go alone and neatly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

James Cotteril headed over from a corner for the home side a minute after Myles' opener but the former Briton Ferry forward had two very good chances to put the match beyond Village's Cardiff hosts. The first, on 26 minutes, Myles controlled an excellent cross-field pass from David Evans and struck it thunderously at Wilkinson who saved with his legs, while two minutes later Myles was put through on goal by Steven Evans but his shot was saved again by the impressive Ross Wilkinson.

Village had various other chances to extend their lead but failed to take advantage of these chances. Those missed opportunities came back to haunt them just before half-time as Caerau conjured up an equalising goal; full-back Marc Dallington raced down the left-hand side and sent a pin-point cross towards the back post where Matthew Mountstephen was waiting and he converted with a diving header.

Bob Lloyd's players carried their form into the second period as they still created chances but were unable to finish them off. Six minutes in and Steven Evans was threaded through by Phil Myles but the big midfielder took one too many touches inside the box and the ball reached the safe hands of Wilkinson and three minutes later Jamie Evans, straight after moving to the right-hand side of midfield, made a run down the right and played an excellent ball into Phil Myles who took a touch and drilled the ball inches wide.

By now the Village management and strong contingent of supporters were asking themselves how their team still had only the one goal on the board, and they were left even more bewildered in the 67th minute as the home side took the lead. It was scored by midfielder James Cotteril who, after being given the space to reach just outside the Village half, struck an unstoppable shot which cannoned beyond Stuart Lloyd and into the top corner.

Rob Shannon had a volley saved shortly afterwards but with 15 minutes to go Garden Village finally found the net for the second time. It was a move that started at the back with substitute Neil Simon playing the ball to Jamie Evans out wide, the youngster took it up the line and cut inside, beat a couple of defenders and then drilled it left-footed across goal and into the bottom corner.

As the game was drawing to a close Village still carried on creating chances to win it but it just didn't work for them. Three minutes after Evans' leveller Rob Shannon missed an open goal but it did ricochet off his shin, in the closing minutes he also shot just wide and had drive a close-range saved and the re-bound was headed wide by Derrick Jenkins.
