Garden Village AFC
Top of the league!
By Owain Johns - August 21 2006
There may only have been three games played but Garden Village top the Second Division after a third straight victory over Merthyr Saints at Stafford Common. Read the report from Saturday's game... >

Garden Village  4 - 1  Merthyr Saints

Welsh Football League Division 2
Saturday August 19, 2006

Village will have sent out a message to the rest of the division after this victory against a Merthyr Saints' side consisting of many fringe players on the books at Southern League outfit Merthyr Tydfil.

And Bob Lloyd's team now top the division after Briton Ferry, joint-leaders at the start of the day, fell to a home defeat against Garw.

The home side played some very good football against a club who have returned to play their football at Penydarren Park, but it was the Saints who took a 7th minute lead through Steve Bradford who capitalised on a poor Stuart Lloyd clearance.

But Lloyd turned to being the hero shortly afterwards as it was his penalty save that denied the visitors taking a 2-0 lead.

David Rimmer equalised two minutes before the break after initially having his penalty saved by the visiting goalkeeper and as the half was drawing to a close Saints had a player sent off for something he said to referee Steve Jones.

Village took the lead for the first time just after the hour through David Evans who met the ball as it came in from a corner - very similar to the one he scored at Cambrian & Clydach Vale the weekend before - while older brother Steve converted at the back post after good build-up play to make it 3-1.

Rob Shannon, making his return after missing the last three weeks with a fractured cheekbone, opened his Garden Village account two minutes later to make the game safe. The Merthyr Saints' goalkeeper dropped the ball under pressure from Derrick Jenkins and Shannon was at hand to put the ball into an empty net.

Bob Lloyd was extremely pleased with the result:

"It was another good victory although it was not as easy as the score suggests," he said.

"The turning point was Stuart's penalty save when we were 1-0 down, and I think it would have been a mountain to climb if it had gone to 2-0.

"As well as that was us having a little bit of lady luck with Dai Rimmer's penalty being brilliantly saved and the rebound going straight back to him.

"We did play really well in the second half, making good use of our extra man; so many times it seems to work against you but we did stretch them big time."
