Garden Village 3 - 1 Ammanford
Welsh Football League Division 2 Wednesday April 17th, 2006
A late Marc Lloyd strike made sure that the three points remained in Kingsbridge after both sides contested a very physical match.
Phil Myles put the home side in front shortly before the break but Ammanford levelled two minutes later, but Myles restored Village's one-goal advantage on the hour and Marc Lloyd rounded off the win with a well-taken goal two minutes into injury-time.
Village welcomed back Derrick Jenkins to the side after he had missed the weekend win at Clydach Vale while it was also very positive to see Rob Shannon kicking a ball around during the half-time interval just three weeks after fracturing his cheekbone. He wasn't due to return to first-team action until the second week of September but could well be involved against Merthyr Saints on Saturday.
The first-half produced very little chances for both sides but Derrick Jenkins, unmarked at the back post, came close to getting on the end of a David Rimmer cross on 26 minutes.
As the half was drawing to a close it felt as if that no one was going to find the back of the net, but that all changed during the last five minutes of the opening period.
In the 42nd minute Marc Lloyd crossed low into the area from the right-hand side and found Phil Myles at the near post, after taking just one touch he neatly slotted the ball between 'keeper Richard Walton and the post for him to score his first of the season. That lead was to last just two minutes as the visitors struck back with an excellent strike, a Liam Preece free-kick from 25-yards, which sailed over the wall and beyond Stuart Lloyd into the top corner.
The second-half took a little while to get going but the home side started to come to life as the game approached the hour, and with that restored their lead with a well-worked move. Marc Lloyd, who played a part in the first goal, was to start the move for the second as his free-kick into the box was knocked across goal by Jamie Evans and found Phil Myles who swung at it and sent in into the bottom corner.
Phil John, playing his first league match at home since May 2005, could have made it three on 64 minutes with a low shot which went inches wide of the post, and he had another crack a few minutes later but that was more slightly off target.
Ammanford came extremely close to equalising towards the end through former Village front-man Dean Jenkins who, after running through three defenders, slotted the ball under Stuart Lloyd but fortunately David Evans was quick enough to reach it and hack it off the line.
The win was sealed in injury-time after Mark Napieralla, who only came on 9 minutes before, made a run into the Ammanford half and played an excellent ball to Marc Lloyd who took a touch and sent it through Walton's legs to make it 3-1.
