Gascoyne: We can win at Monaco

Is he overconfident?
By role May 5 2003
Mike Gascoyne, Renaults F1 Technical Director, is very outspoken about the matters that surround the team. When Alonso got pole in Malaysia and people were arguing his car was empty of fuel he declared they were in the right strategy.
Five races and three podiums later and Mike Gascoyne is starting to say that Renault F1 could win this season at either Monaco or Hungary.

Renault has showed incredible pace this weekend at Spain, where Alonso qualified 3rd and finished in the podium for the French squad. His race was faultless as he finished only less than 6 seconds from Michael Schumacher.

Renault is expecting to improve on horsepower for the next race in Austria, but the team is looking forward to Monaco where the nature of the circuit perfectly matches the advantages of a car with one of the best chassis and a not so powerful engine.

Many laughed when Renault declared at the start of the season that their aim was between 3 to 6 podiums. Now that they have gotten 3 podiums in only five races the team is starting to look at the possibility of a win. He told Autosport online:

"We want to be in the top three. There'll be some worse circuits for us but we've got to look at going and winning in Monaco and Hungary, and being on the podium at places like Silverstone and Suzuka. Qualifying fifth or sixth is no longer good enough for us."

The team is placing lots of pressure on themselves, but so far Gascoyne has proven to be on mark with his predictions.
