Belper Meadows V Clowne Town
Clowne Town Survive Away At Belper! 07/09/03 At Belper
Clowne skipper Phil Bennett asked Belper to bat in the last game of the season knowing that if his team could n't force the win the points gained from batting out for the draw would be crucial in their fight for survival.
The Belper innings followed the usual pattern of recent weeks with Clowne making early inroads but unable to follow up. Again it was Steve Bennett who made the breakthrough removing openers Cox and Bailey to leave Belper on 30 for 2. From here the innings went downhill for Clowne as Moran and Alden for Belper took control despite an excellent spell from Jamie Fellows. Aubrey Ashley and Dave Keys came into the attack and did slow the scoring somewhat but were unable to stop the good and determined batsmen from the opposition. The captain introduced Gary Hibbard to try and break things up and he did the job with a brute of a ball accounting for Alden. Steve Bennett(14-3-51-3) finally removed Moran for 92 near the end of the innings as Belper closed on 205 for 4.
Belper Meadows 205-4.
Clowne's innings was opened by Chris Hendley and Steve Bennett and Bennett who had to leave early for work also left the crease early, first ball to be exact getting one that bounced of a length from Manning. Gary Hibbard and Stewart Houghton soon followed as it became clear that Clowne would struggle to chase the total. This proved to be even more of a problem with the removal of the number one batsmen Chris Hendley (19) however long innings from Phil Bennett (13) and Graham White (9) saw Clowne to within sight of the draw. Jamie Fellows and Aubrey Ashley saw Clowne home to a valuable 4 points which were as warmly greeted in the Riddings dressing room at Darley Dale as Clowne's .
Clowne Towne 83-8.
The draw in the end proved to be enough as we now know Old Park were the ones to take the dreaded drop. This ends what can only be described as a disappointing season for the seconds only to be expected however in light of the problems both teams had in selecting consistent teams due to unavailability of players. It is a safe bet that the teams that won promotion and the league were able to get their best players out on a more often basis than Clowne were. Something perhaps to think about for next season.
Clowne Town beat Stonebroom by 4 wickets.
Points 4 - Clowne
19 - Belper Meadows
