Clowne Town Get Shut out by the Gate!
16/08/03
At Ambergate

With usual 2ndXI skipper Phill Bennett not playing due to him being at a wedding, it was up to vice-captain Paul Osborne to take over the reigns of a struggling Clowne side. And their chances weren’t helped as Graham White and Jamie Fellows didn’t make it to the ground in time for the start of the game as they were still on their way home from Hunmanby.

However, Clowne seemingly weren’t missing the two as Steve Bennett (10-2-27-3), opening the bowling for Clowne, struck in the first over to remove Beveridge with the help of Mark Osborne’s safe hands for 4. Matt Linacre (10-4-14-2) was the other opening bowler and he was generating some good pace and getting the ball to seam around but went un-rewarded for a good opening spell.

White and Fellows arrived 20 minutes late and Fellows (12-3-41-4) was immediately introduced into the attack along with Dave Keys (12-2-38-0). Fellows then removed the Ambergate skipper, P. Tomlinson, LBW for 17 with him walking all the way across his stumps. A rather girly appeal followed the ball hitting the pads from the tall fast bowler. Keys was bowling his usual tight line and had a few chances to get wickets but it just wasn’t his day. Fellows then struck again, clean bowling T. Holmes for 14 with score on 68-3 from 24 overs.

Linacre then came back into the attack replacing Fellows and struck immediately clean bowling the dangerous looking T. Hancock for 29. Two overs later Linacre claimed another wicket again clean bowling M. Morris for 4. Linacre really was bowling very well and the Ambergate batsmen had no answer to him getting the ball to seam about all over the place. Fellows was re-introduced into the attack and started to take a bit of a battering from the Ambergate batsmen. However, a good run out to remove L. Doneean for 1 lifted the spirits of the Clowne side. Bennett then removed T. Rouse for 11, clean bowling him and then also clean bowing P. Bryan for 15 as he was just starting to open his shoulders. Fellows then removed the very dangerous J. Walters for 24 and then wrapped up the innings by uprooting J. Gardeners off stump.

Ambergate 139 All Out.

After stocking up on some much needed food and fluids, Clowne started their run chase. Hendley and Fellows opened the batting for the visitors and got off to a reasonable start finding the boundary a few times. But with the score on 13, Fellows spooned a catch to the Ambergate skipper off the bowling of Morris (9-3-30-3) for 9. However, the umpire did not give out Fellows as he felt it was a bump ball. Fellows, already walking back to the pavilion couldn’t be sure and the wicket was given. This bought Matt Linacre to the crease. He and Chris tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but Matt ended up playing all round a straight one and was clean bowled by Bryan (12-5-19-2) for 3. Graham White then came to the crease and he and Chris put on a decent partnership before Hendley was undone by the leg spinner J. Walters (5-2-4-1) and he was bowled for a well made 21.

Skipper Osborne then came to the crease and unfortunately didn’t stick around for very long as he was bowled by the other leggy J. Beveridge (12.3-4-35-4) for 1. G. White soon followed, caught off the bowling of Beveridge for 11. S. Bennett was at the crease now for Clowne and J. Hendley joined him. However, John came and went as he bowled by the returning Morris for a duck. Matt Parker joined Bennett at the crease and for the second time in two days Parker fell to an outstanding close catch. This time he creamed a drive that went at about ankle height towards the bowler. Beveridge then reached down and grasped the ball in his hands. Parker departed for 1. Morris bowled Mark Osborne also for 1 and Stuart Houghton joined Bennett at the crease. Bennett smashed a 6 straight back over the head of the returning Bryan and was really playing well as was Houghton at the other end. However, just as it was looking like Clowne could do it, Bennett didn’t get hold of a drive and was C+B by Bryan for a well made 31. Keys joined Houghton at the crease and their job was to bat out the overs. However, Beveridge bowled Keys for 4 and the game was all over. Houghton finished on 9*.
