Codnor V Clowne Town
Clowne Town Crumble Against Codnor! 09/08/03 At Codnor
Clowne arrived at Codnor at 1250 before most of the Codnor lads on a very hot and sunny day more suited to Spain. Clowne lost the toss and Codnor decided to have a bat. Clowne opened the bowling with the returning duo of Swannack and Steers. Swannack bowled a good opening spell having Beach (4) caught behind in his 5th over. Steers also bowled at a good pace but got punished when he drifted down the leg side. Linacre came on for Steers after his 5 over spell (Just as he was getting into rhythm sometimes the 5 over restriction can be more of a hindrance than a help to young fast bowlers, perhaps the restriction of overs should just be a guide than a rule?) and Ashley came on for Swannack. Ashley proved to be a little expensive however he did take the wicket of Brown (30) due to a good diving catch by Kinsey at midwicket. Ashley finished with figures of (4/0/28/1). Linacre also took the wicket of Lanyon with the help of the catch of the season so far by Len Wright, not the first time the old man of the sea has landed a good catch!. Soon after this wicket however two missed run out chances would cost Clowne dear and ultimatly cost them the game. Wolley was at the crease and had about 10, he took a quick single with the ball heading straight to Linacre half way down the wicket he was sent back however the throw was wild and he escaped. What was to happen 2 balls later made that attempt look world class. In a similar situation Wolley hit the ball straight down the ground to Dale Steers and set off running again he turned back and a good throw would have been his downfall however a waywood throw from steers and the ball went a good 10 feet over Holmes who was wicket keeping and Codnor gained 4 over throws and Clowne missed out on the wicket of Wolley, the last chance we would have. Wolley was joined by Colson at the wicket and the pair put on 70 before Colson was caught in the deep off the bowling of Matthew Linacre (his first wicket for the 1st team. Wolley had hit the ball well all afternoon and had brought up his 50 and eventually finished on 86 not out in a good knock but Clowne should had got him much earlier in the game. He was well supported in the later stages of the Codnor innings by Spicer (15) andd Bradley 6 and Codnor finished on 192-8.
Codnor 192-8
As the Clowne opening pair of Holmes and Mw Osborne made their way to the crease the sun was still high in the sky and it was still very hot. The pair made a very good start and had made 50 off the first 10 overs. Osborne was then caught by the diving Beach at mid wicket for 25 and has to consider himself a little unlucky after looking in good form. Dale Steers was in at 3 and was bowled for 1. Then to the crease came Nigel Spencer and he got off to a good start with his first two scoring shots being huge sixes over square leg. Spencer and Holmes took the score over 100 in the 18th over. What should have been an easy canter to the target turned into another tragic batting display as the Clowne batsmen playing loose shots and paying the consequences. Spencer was caught at midwicket for 26. Wright then went for 5. Holmes who had brought up his secong 50 in two weeks was then joined by Linacre and again this pair then looked to have the game well in control until Linacre was caught at gully for 18. Clowne now required 50 from the last 10 with 4 wickets in hand and in form Holmes at the crease. However Holmes made the mistake of hitting out to early and was caught for 63 leaving his team in deep trouble. Matthew Linacre then came to the crease and hit a fast 18 but was then caught. White had made a steady 10 and had taken Clowne on to the brink of a win however a pulled hamstring hampered him and he was also out caught. Swannack was next in and hit his first ball for 4 leaving Clowne needing 15 to win the next ball was a bye and Kinsey was on strike, he lasted one ball given out LBW in the 2nd to last over. Ashley was last man in and blocked out the remainder of the over. Swannack was the man to face the last over. He survived until the 4 th ball of the last over and was caught. Leaving Clowne to think about what might have been.
