Hall of fame profiles: - Ian McMillan
By Chris Mac November 30 2005
'The wee Prime Minister' has lived every Airdrie boy's dream, when his sublime talents were recognised by the international selection committee and Ian fulfilled a lifetime ambition by playing for his country. His sportsmanship, in tandem with his skills, made him an extremely popular Airdrieonians player.

Birth Date: 18.03.1931

Playing Position: Attacker

Clubs: - Airdrie, Rangers, Airdrie

International Honours: - Scotland (6 caps)

Ian McMillan, was born in Airdrie on March 18 1931, he is a qualified quantity surveyor and never became a full-time player.

He joined Airdrie in 1949 and spent 10 years at his home town team where he earned five caps for Scotland.

While Harold Macmillan was telling the country from 10 Downing Street that "you've never had it so good", Ian McMillan became known as the "Wee Prime Minister" because he could dictate the pace of a game with his fantastic control. He was good at shielding the ball from defenders, holding it up, and had the confidence to delay his passes allowing other strikers to get in to the game.

McMillan joined Rangers in 1958 where he only managed to get one other Scotland Cap. He played in 194 games for Rangers scoring 55 goals - though surprisingly he never found the net against Celtic - and won two Championships, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Finally Ian saw the light and rejoined Airdrie, hanging up his boots at the end of the 1966-67 season after a playing career lasting 20 years.

Ian became coach, manager between 1970 and 1976, a director and is now the Honorary President of the club.
