Broomfield Stomp Match Report

All our possible opponents are busy this weekend on Bells Cup duty and the only other team we could have played, Dumbarton have something else on at the rock. So Airdrie United now have a week off!

We travelled to Clifton Hill expecting a win but by how much was the question. Again Sandy was with out, Paul Lovering bruised ribs, Martin Hardie Hamstring and Kevin Barkey with a broken wrist.

Albion Rovers had the majority of the possession in the opening moments of the game, a few corners that didn't place too much trouble of Craig Samson’s broad shoulders.

Our first goal came after some fine play in the mid-field by Airdrie that finally opened a gap for David Dunn to ping a shot at goal; it flew in the back of the net giving the Rovers keeper no chance. Although in control Airdrie were not in total domination even though Rovers didn't look like scoring.

Sandy made some changes at the start of the second half, Gary Twigg replaced Mark Roberts and Lee Hollis came on to replace Craig Samson. Once again Albion Rovers started off on top but ran out of steam pretty quickly. Our passing game in the mid-field kept us in control but we just didn't seem to dominate them as much as we could have. Our second goal came as Gary Twigg sent a cross ball across the face of the goal to the near post, Willie McLaren was on call to place the header in to the net.

Our third and final goal came when some passing play found Gary Twigg in a little space on the edge of the Albion box, the easy the option would have been to hit the shot first time, instead Gary knocked it by the last defender and picked his spot in the back of the net.

The final word has to go to Brian McPhee from the sublime to the rediculuos. A cross ball from the near corner saw Brian McPhee strike a bicycle kick that rattled of the near post. Next in front of an open goal Brian sent a header by the post when it would have been far easier to score.
