Airdrie News Saturday 22nd January 2005 |
Clan Chief
It was more like Heartbreak Avenue than Love Street for the travelling Diamonds support as we slumped to a disappointing defeat to a side that up until Saturday hadn’t won a league match since November.
We rarely troubled the Buddies defence and in fact I can only recall two shots at goal for us. An overhead kick from Gow, which went over the bar and a rather tame effort from Coyle, which went by the post.
The only highlight of the match from the Diamonds point of view was the magnificent save from McGeown, which in my opinion has got to be the save of the season. Markie dived low to his right from a header from the Buds O’Neil which from where I was sitting looked net bound but Markie some how got to and turned it round the post.
Away from the football there was an incident at half time, which angered me and many other Airdrie fans when Paisley’s finest decided to remove an Airdrie flag that was displayed in the Airdrie end. We had to endure sectarian chants from the Love Street North bank for having the audacity to have a union flag with our club’s name on it. I cannot for the life of me comprehend why this should be deemed offensive to the Saints support and I cannot understand why the police took no action over the deeply insulting sectarian chants from a section of the St Mirren support.
