After a disappointing, and highly controversial defeat just three days earlier, Airdrie travelled to Cappielow again, this time on Challenge Cup duties.

Airdrie reintroduced veteran Kenny Black at left wing back in place of David Dunn, and Stephen Docherty played on the right wing. The Diamonds were a wholly different outfit in this match and pressured Morton in a way they failed to three days earlier. The game exploded to life ten minutes from half time when Morton defender McGregor was sent off for a dreadful challenge on Docherty then Alan McManus needlessly retaliated and was red carded too. To compound things, Stevie McKeown, in such fine form went off with a nasty ankle injury.
