Morton today
By diamondblogger August 30 2008
Airdrie take on Morton in game 5 of 2008/9 season. Morton, like us, went to the capital in midweek and claimed a major scalp, so I'm hopeful we'll see a very healthy and vibrant crowd. Let's hope a bit of good publicity will encourage people to get out and cheer on this side which is increasingly looking like it's the real deal.

Allan McManus left us a couple of years ago to go to St. Johnstone and he left a gaping hole in our defence that Airdrie simply couldn't fill.   McManus was a leader, organiser, and key operator for us for a good few years and his loss, along with Martin Hardie, were simply key factors in our relegation two seasons ago as they were impossible to replace at that time.

But now it's a different story.   After failed efforts with guys like Gary Teirney, Neil McGowan, Smyth, McKenna, stop gap Stuart Taylor, Marcin Lukacevski, etc., we've stumbled upon a monster pairing in Bobby Donnelly and David Nixon.   Both players are absolute behemoths compared to our normal kind of centre half, but not only are they ginormous, they get on the end of absolutely everything thrown at them.  Their handling of this league's best strikers in the early stages of this season has been encouraging.

So today is a watershed of sorts.   How do the new defence compare to the ghost of days gone by?   Will we be able to look on and see that we've finally progressed at long last?

Some might point to look at our lack of goals, but they'll come.   Hopefully by the end of today people will be talking about our continued clean sheet record, four games and counting, rather than a lack of goals.
