In the end it was a professional job by the Diamonds in a match where I always thought we would be well tested and so it turned out.
Most of the play went front to back with very little individual skill on display, Hazely had a couple of mazy runs from defence but nothing to get to get excited about, in fact I heard more than one fan say it was like a pre-season friendly.
Airdrie opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Simon Lynch headed in Mark Smyth's pin point cross, Marc was given a little time on the edge off the box and simply chose his target. Simon Lynch's header snuck in off the post.
As a fan I expected us to go on and dominate, we didn't and it became a war of attrition and actually quite boring.
It took an opportune strike/cross from Darren Smith to win the match for the Diamonds. After a corner for the Airdrie Darren got the ball on the edge of the box and chipped in to the far corner Brown in the East Fife goals seemed to have it covered but parried the ball in to the back of the net.
Goal three came from Darren Smith once again, we took a short corner and Darren crossed in and Di-Giacomo struck home, as the Airdrie fans celebrated referee Tumilty signalled for a goal kick. I believe some of our fans are still celebrating a 3 - 0 win.
East fife 0 - 2 Airdrie job done!
