Where have all the scarfers gone?
By Stomp Admin May 26 2008
Since the end of the 2007 - 2008 season two weeks ago, any nuetral reading the Stomp would think Airdrie fans are only second to the old firm when it comes to moaning and blaming others for our unfortunate situation. The Scottish Football League, Gretna and Mike McCurry are up near the top this season.

As always we have a different theory concening our situation! We blame the casual attitude of our fans!

No we didn't say Casuals or hooligans, we don't even mean the supporter who only turns up to games once in a while, we mean our attire!

Taking Queen of the South as an example, three buses leave Dumfries for away games, their travel club is an actual club and they go to the matches in the club colours. They enjoy the day out with out being hasstled and go home after a good day out. Yeah that's alright for away games you might say but even at home games their colours are shown around the town as though they are proud of being Queens fans, do you remember how that feels? Surely that's the best kind of advertising the club could recieve fans proud to wear the club colours around the town.

So we ask once again where have all our scarfers gone?

Agree, sometimes at the games you would think you where at a wedding the way people dress, you should be proud to wear your colours

total bunkem, i believe football shairts should only be worn by players, people playing the sport or children under 15, there's nothing more embarassing than seeing a grown man or woman wearing a football top, garish, horrible materials and often ill fitting.I'm with DBW on this one, nonsense of the highest order.

Just like the cross eyed retards that wear thier Rangers and Celtic tops everywhere.
Pish i buy a top (up until Airdrieonians demise) and put it away for future generations.
Wouldnt wear one around town or at a match for fear of being mistaken for Billy Peace or some other cretin.

Flags are OK though

Agree on that point.....

Although we're not talking about wearing tops everywhere nor is the point retricted to tops. Colours, that's the issue, and they are not displayed often enough. You'd be hard pushed to know there's a match on in airdrie as very little people wear colours. Thnk that's what the op is driving at, it's all about reminding the town they have a team.

Tell you what, there's nothing more encouraging than seeing the younger generation wearing the diamond out and about...

Rather than blaming loyal fans who already pay over the odds to get into matches and travel all over the country to follow the team for the fact that you wouldn't know there was a match on in Airdrie on matchdays, you'd be better off looking at the way the club is marketed and promoted in the local community.

Always good to see people wearing their Airdrie tops around town especially the kids.
shows a bit of originality to see kids in the diamond as oppossed to hooped and blue carling shirts. Last year I actually saw a youngster in an Albion Rovers top in Gartlea and I thought good on ye at least it wiznae a old firm top.
Just a pity it wasn't an Airdrie shirt.

Not blaming anyone Kaz, just pointing out that on a Saturday, the lack of Airdrie colours is notable for various reasons. You'll see more old Firm colours than Airdrie and most of them will have never ever set foot in a football stadium.

You know me mate and you know you've never seen me wearing Airdrie colours lol so who am i to assign blamesmiling smiley

Yeah mate I know, my response wasn't really aimed at you in particular, it's just irritating when you hear from people at work for example about how Albion Rovers had an open day type thing on Saturday or that Motherwell are giving away tickets in Airdrie schools etc.

I rarely wear my strip unless I'm playing mainly because of the horrible material all strips seem to be made of that make you sweat 10 times more than normal clothes.

I have never actually owned an Airdrie Top (shame I hear you cry), but I have always worn my club scarf with pride.
Could it be the "no football colours" attitude of many local pubs (and pubs near away grounds) that discourages some?

I sort of understand what you are saying. I was out and about in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire over the weekend and was sort of suprised to see so many people wearing Stags polo shirts, tops, etc. a club that has just been relegated, whose fans broke into the board room and assaulted their manager last game of the season you would think they had nothing to be proud of but yet they still wear there shirts in defiance. I think wearing colours around town sends out a message and confidence breeds confidence. So wear your colours with pride.

could we break into the boardroom and assault our manager?

Perhaps you're calling for a return to the days of high-waisted flared jeans, when wearing a scarf around the neck did not suffice; scarves had to be worn on each wrist as well, thus completing the Bay City Roller look.
