Airdrie 2(4) Vs. 2(2) Raith
By StompAdmin May 4 2008
Yesterday's match even with a 2 - 0 lead was always going to be frantic, we saw from Wednesday nights match that Raith were going to be a threat they liked to hold on to the ball and pass it around and only lacked a killer touch in front of goals. Saturday's game had me sitting on the edge of my seat and at times dreading the outcome of the game.

In the pub before the match the debate was whether Kenny would opt for a defensive appoach to the match, maybe changing from the 4-2-2 we had been playing to a 4-5-1.  Would we go for an early goal or sit back and wait to atack them on the break.

When Raith changed their formation to 4-3-3, It looked as though they intended to attack from the out set and so it proved.

Kenny sticking with the 4-2-2 formation that has served him well, must have known from the outset that this was going to be a tough one. Andreoni in particular was kicked black and blue and stood up to the punishment very well.  The opening minutes of the game were pretty even, it took 10 minutes and a mis hit strike by Allan Russell to open the scoring. Bryan Prunty sruck home from inside the penalty box to give us the lead and three goals of breathing space.

The lead lasted eight minutes, Bobby Donnelly commited a foul outside the penalty box and Robert Sloan stepped up to take the free kick. It looked like the Airdrie defensive wall did it's job until referee Thomson plew for a penalty, it seems Andreoni handled the ball inside the box. Graham Weir sent Robertson the wrong way and the game was back to being level.

For the rest of the first half and most of the second I was sitting on the edge of my seat, probably the same as the 1300+ Airdrie fans who were at the match. It took a further fifty nine minutes for that pressure to ease and it came after a goal mouth scrammble that saw Bobby Donnelly score Airdries second of the day. Again our lead didn't last long and with two minutes to go Raith Rovers equalised.

The two goal lead established on Wednesday night saw us through to the second division play off final.

For your information, as a thank you season ticket holders will once again be entitled to a £5 discount for Wednesday nights game against Clyde.

Wednesday we play Clyde at home with a 7:45pm kick off. Sat we are away to Clyde with a 3:00pm kick off.

4-2-2? No wonder we didn't dominate!
