Buxton 0 Leigh Genesis 0

By Matt Lawton October 4 2008
Jordan Stepien's second missed penalty of the season proved costly as, despite dominating proceedings at Silverlands, Leigh Genesis returned from Derbyshire with only a point to show for their efforts in the game away to Buxton, leaving the Leythers just three points shy of the UniBond Premier League play-off places.

With Leigh's last outing coming ten days previously with the battling 1-0 victory away to fellow play-off challengers Marine, Genesis boss Steve Bleasdale had a virtually full-strength side to choose from, with only winger Jerome Watt missing from the side after he picked up a hamstring strain in the win at the Arriva Stadium.

With the amount of rain falling in Derbyshire, it's easy to understand where the town's bottled water reputation comes from, but Buxton have so far struggled this season, although a recent FA Cup win over Blue Square North side Burscough shows that they certainly aren't to be underestimated, especially on their own patch.

However, it was the visitors that had the lion's share of possession and, after a closely-fought first half, should have taken the lead in the second half when substitute Matt Berkeley was brought crashing to the ground by Buxton goalkeeper Scott Hartley, receiving a heavy blow to his collarbone that saw him forced to leave the field for academy graduate Richard Chetcuti.

Unfortunately, Jordan Stepien wasn't able to compensate for the injury to his fellow substitute and saw his penalty kick superbly saved by the Buxton goalkeeper, the second time that Leigh have missed out on two extra points because of a missed penalty, following on from last month's 1-1 draw at Nantwich Town.

With next weekend Leigh's second in three weeks without a game because of FA Cup fixtures, Genesis have their next run out coming a week on Tuesday (14th October) when they travel to the Wirral to face Cammell Laird, before an FA Trophy trip to Harrogate Railway Athletic, FA Cup giantkillers of last season, the following Saturday.
