A Ghost in the Machine
By Paul August 18 2008
It was about time that David Moffett broke his silence, again. He chose yesterday's Wales on Sunday to lament plan's for a fifth regional side, describing his predecessors moves as “lunacy”. This is hardly surprising coming from a man who's downfall was practically sealed in his decision to axe the Warriors.

Almost three years after leaving his role as chief executive, Moffett continues to haunt his former employers. Many would argue that some of his previous comments to the Welsh media have discredited his views some what.

In light of his comments that Wales should revert to four club sides, something he fought tooth and nail against, it's difficult not to feel that he is willing to offer a sound bite to anyone willing to listen, this along with his move into the business motivation market, would suggest Moffett is turning into some sort of David Brent character.

He says: “Why the WRU would want to further reduce the effectiveness of the existing regions is beyond me, unless they are going down the French and English route of getting even more overseas players.

But if they think they have got enough talent for five teams then they are living in cloud cuckoo land.”

I feel he has missed the point somewhat. The whole emphasis of any new region would be to develop players. Our existing regions are operating like their European counterparts, to get anywhere in the Heineken cup or to challenge in the Magners league you need at least seven or eight solid foreigners.

Also : “A development team is not going to get any results.

I know for a fact that Ireland would like to cast Connacht aside. If you’re honest, what does Connacht bring to the party?

Even as the smallest province on the emerald isle, Connacht has a population of over half a million. Considering the success they've had against Welsh opposition, especially during his time as chief executive, I think this is quite an unfortunate comment. At a time when Ireland are scraping the barrel in order to fill their their A Team at the Churchill cup, increasing player depth would make having four sides very handy indeed.

Further more: “I’ve always felt that there should be a region in North Wales.

But the way of doing that is by moving one of the regions to the north – and, if the WRU are serious about North Wales, I would suggest that the best one would be the Dragons.

This is utter hypocrisy, in the same article Moffett speaks of finding it hard to “understand why they are tampering with something that’s still new in the making.” There's been so much progress, albeit gradual progress at Rodney Parade, such a suggestion is in the realms of the “cuckoo land” he claims the WRU are living in.

As an alternative: “No, if they want a development team they should reduce the Premiership to 12 teams and give three teams to each region. That’s your feeder operation.”

Well if you wanted to kill of interest in rugby below the regions in Wales and stifle any ambition, the they should consider that as an idea.

In fairness to Moffett, who know lives in back in New Zealand some of his views are fairly valid and worth a read here.

But when there's little to substantiate this extra region is likely to be anything more than just a North Wales side in the Welsh Premiership, Moffett's comments are ill-judged and head-line grabbing, perhaps you could say which is only a continuation of his time in Wales, if you felt that way.
