After watching rookie Ryan Briscoe lead the way on day one, it was the turn of the more established IRL names to hit the front – with four of AGR drivers inside the top five.
Franchitti left it late to secure his place on top of the times, putting in a lap time of 1m 10.1748s on the 2.21-mile road course to edge out fellow Brit Dan Wheldon, who set a quickest time of 1m 10.4223s.
“We've been sort of making changes to the car, seeing the reactions we get from them, trying to get rid of some imbalances, basic stuff we do at the right start of every season really,” Franchitti said afterwards, “although we're a little bit rusty from driving only on ovals the last couple of years, the team as well setting the car up just for ovals."
