Millennium Date for Glos

Millennium Date for Glos
By Andrew Collins July 24 2008
Cardiff Blues have confirmed that their 2nd round Heineken Cup match against West Country club, Gloucester, will take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday 19th November, at 3pm. The match is crucial if the Arms Park outfit harvest any hopes of qualification.

It will be the third, and probably final, time that Cardiff Blues will play at the Welsh national stadium, following the Magner's League win against Leinster and loss in European Cup against Leicester.

However, following this season, the regional side will switch to their new home in Leckwith with 30,000 capacity.

In October 2006, Cardiff set a Welsh Heineken Cup record attendance of 26,645 against Leicester, but given the number of supporters Gloucester are expected to bring with them, that record could well be broken.

While the club will receive extra revenue for the high amount of tickets sold, they're throwing away home advantage in a match that could so easily go against them. Despite setting the record in 2006, the Blues were beaten despite being fancied to win the match.

It's a move that's angered many fans, who are far more desperate to reach the Heineken Cup Quarter Finals for a second year running than claim a few extra thousand pounds.

The Gloucester match is a must win fixture if the Blues are to emerge from the group containing Biarritz and Calvasano, while if they want to emerge top, they will need to pick up a win on the road in the West Country or France along the way.

Not only will the squad be in unfamiliar surroundings compared with the Arms Park fortress, but given the extra tickets and large demand from travelling Glos supporters, it's possible the home support could be outnumbered, and almost certainly out voiced.

And there's more bad news for Blues fans, who will not be seeing captain, Xavier Rush in action until Christmas. He will miss the Millennium stadium match against Gloucester, as well as back to back fixtures against Biarritz.
