Jones Expected As Coach

Jones Expected As Coach
By Andrew Collins May 13 2008
Former Welsh scrum half, Robert Jones, looks poised to become the Cardiff Blues new backs coach, replacing Rob Howley, who will be working full time with Warren Gatland and the Welsh set up. The 52-times capped coach is currently working with Llanelli.

Swansea legend, Jones, has been working with the Llanelli Scarlets for the past 2 seasons, in what has been a very varied years for the region. Having arrived as part of Phil Davies' new coaching team in 2006, Jones has been the Scarlets skills coach, a similar position to that of backs coach at the Blues.

His likely arrival comes having failed to lure Australian coach, Scott Johnson, to the region. The former Wales caretaker coach held extensive talks with Dai Young, but opted to take up the role of Head Coach at USA's national side.

Young, Peter Thomas and Bob Nortser did hold talks with numerous coaches while on a scouting tour of New Zealand and Australia recently, however they found very little and returned largely unsuccessful.

However, with the recent shock sacking of Phil Davies at the Scarlets, Jones may also be for the chop when new coach, Nigel Davies, decides his coaching team.

The move is as yet unconfirmed, but Jones is currently favourite to land the position.

I think this i smuch better for the region than if we had australian johnson. he would not have helped.

But Jones is Welsh so it is good. But the man I really would like to have is rupert moon.

It won't happen, but I'd love us to get David Knox.

I like his style: http://www.independent.ie/sport/rugby/knox-lashes-out-at-wrong-man-kidney-1373934.html

I'm insulted you would even question me!

But no, in all fairness, this one is definately on the cards. Jones was interviewed at half time during the Scarlets last game of the season, and he said then that he was in talks with the Blues.

He didn't mention this, but with Davies coming in, he may well have to make way.

Rob Jone. The last Welsh 9 to have a decent pass. Too many Box kicks though!
