Working in a management capacity with Ford for a number of year, through the Large and Luxury Car Group, through Racing Programmes Manager, and then on to the Product Strategy Office, Szafnauer also had the time and energy to run his own race team, Team Otmar Racing, for which he also drove.

In 1998 Szafnauer joined the fledgling British American Racing team as Operations Director, overseeing the team during a turbulent period. In 2002 he moved 60 miles south to join Honda Racing Development, taking up the Vice President role next to Yasuhiro Wada.

In 2007 Otmar took on a more significant role within Honda Racing F1, assuming responisbility for building the future of the team as the Director of Strategy and Business Planning.

Szafnauer is also the Honda representative to the FIA in Formula 1, going to the Engine Working Group meetings, and being the Honda spokesman at all the official FIA press conferences.
