Shuhei Nakamoto joined the Honda Racing Corporation back in 1983, rising quickly to Project Leader the next year, looking after chassis design for the RS125 and RS250 production race motorbikes.
In 1988 he took on more responsibility, becoming Large Project Leader for a number of special projects, starting out with the RS250 production race motorbike, before moving on through two steps of the RS125 version.
A spell running the NSR 250 WGP motorcycle programme followed in 1992, before switching to superbikes in 1997, leading the RVF750 project. Three years on and the VTR1000 Superbike project came under his leadership, working out of the Honda R&D base in Tochigi.
A switch to Honda Racing Development in Bracknell occurred in 2002, with Nakamoto taking on the Race and Test Team Manager role, working closely with BAR. A year later Nakamoto became Engineering Director, a role he kept until the middle of 2006.
Following a string of disappointing results, the management structure within Honda Racing F1 was altered, with Nakamoto taking on the role of Senior Technical Director.
