Bernie Ecclestone tells Button to honour contract
By Phil Huff July 30 2005
Bernie Ecclestone weighed into the Jenson Button saga over the weekend, stating that the Lucky Strike BAR Honda driver has a moral obligation to move to Williams.
"A deal is a deal," said Ecclestone yesterday. "If Jenson has signed a contract he should stick to what he has agreed to do. If he didn't want to be at Williams he shouldn't have signed the contract. He was doing what he wanted to do.

"I am a fan of Jenson's and I would love to see him win races and become World Champion one day," continued the Formula One supremo. "He would be a great Champion. He is great for the sport but when you sign a contract, that's it."

Almost exactly a year ago, Bernie Ecclestone said the same things, but that time saying Jenson had a moral obligation to stay at BAR Honda, conceding that "when agents, promises and big money come into it, morals go out the window."

A year ago he also slipped in a mild threat, commenting that "If Button is found to be in breach of contract with BAR and wants to move on illegally, he could lose his super licence and that would mean he couldn't drive for Williams."

The same situation could arise this year, albeit reversed.
