For Sure Championship: Huge Button effort scuppered by Massa

Scuppered by Massa
By Phil Huff October 21 2009
This weekend saw Jenson Button put in a huge effort to take the championship, starting from behind and making great efforts to push to the front but, unlike on track, it just wasn't enough in the RealBrawnGP.com For Sure Championship.

Sitting in the Thursday press conference alongside team mate Rubens Barrichello and Red bull's Sebastian Vettel, Jenson dominated proceedings, refusing to allow anybody else to utter 'for sure', and claiming all nine 'for sure's' for himself. that alone was enough to take him from third place in to second, within striking distance of Vitantonio Liuzzi.

However, the appearance of a third driver from Ferrari in the Friday conference scuppered the Brawn strategy, as Felipe Massa took full advantage of the unexpected conditions to do just enough to stay ahead of the Briton.

Elsewhere, the other competitors seemed to realise the championship chase was over for them, putting in very little effort. both Rubens Barrichello and Mark Webber had two chances to up their totals, but failed to take any advantage, while McLaren's Lewis Hamilton managed just one 'for sure' over two press conferences, choosing instead to focus on preparations for 2010.

As we head to the final round of the championship, the smart money is on surprise leader Liuzzi. Button can easily claim second place, but he's got a huge hurdle to clear if he wants to take this championship - and I think we'd all agree this is the one he really wants.

"As we head to the new challenges of Abu Dhabi, we expected a mix of final pushes for glory along with resigned acceptance of failure," said F1 language consultant Elaine Conedoff. "However, Abu Dhabi will share much with Bahrain, where it must be remembered we had one of the most disappointing efforts of the season. All eyes will be on Jenson to see if he can capitalise on the presumed lack of 'for sure' in the Abu Dhabi emirate"

F1's language standards adjudicator, Major Nameup, is happier with recent results. "with the exception of Jenson Button, who clearly has a lot to gain, we're pleased to note that the use of 'for' and 'sure' placed together inappropriately has been showing a downward trend over recent races. This is good, as we're only 12 uses away from hitting 200 for the season, and if that happens I'll have to get Max involved. And maybe Jean and Ari, and that could get messy. At the end of the day, the sun goes down."

* The RealBrawnGP.com For Sure World Championship monitors the official FIA press conferences. The Thursday, Friday, Qualifying and Race conferences from each Grand Prix weekend are counted, but only for driver appearances. An 'event' is defined as one such press conference appearance, and the total usage of 'for sure' over the season will be divided by the total number of events a driver has participated in to produce a For Sure per Event figure. In the event of a draw, the driver with the least 'events' will take the lead, they having been given fewer opportunities to use the vital phrase.
