Caerphilly 5 - 78 Bridgend |
|
Despite a request from Caerphilly to the WRU for the game to be postponed, the Cheesemen were forced into playing this match despite having one of the biggest matches of their lives looming this weekend. Mark Ring's Caerphilly face Padova this weekend and although they have a 17 point headstart going into the game, Ring wanted to take no chances by playing his strongest 15 against Bridgend on Wednesday night. Ring took the decision to conduct a first team training session whilst his assistant looked after the "second string" who were up against a strong Bridgend team. However, Bridgend want to secure the last Welsh Premiership title before Wales goes regional which is understandable and so they went all out attack. Tries in the first half from Matt James (2), Craig Richards, Owain Lloyd, Simon Mannix, David Bishop and Shawn Van Rensburg, six of which improved by Mannix gave the Ravens a 47 - 0 half time lead. In the second half more misery was to be piled on the Caerphilly youngsters with further tries for James, Bishop and Richards as well as two from Paul Jones and conversions from Jones, Bishop and Richards. Caerphilly did however manage to get on the scoreboard near the end with a try from James Kestell but Bridgend were the runaway winers by 78 points to 5. Overall, no team will have really benefited from the match but Bridgend could only play what was put in front of them. The result means that Bridgend maintain their 100% record and now look like the favourites to lift the title. |
