Shaun Udal stole the show with bowling figures of five for 59 as Hampshire dismissed India for 236 on the first day of their tour match.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, India would have been hoping for a big total on a good-looking pitch and with favourable batting conditions.

Wasim Jaffer and Virender Sehwag looked to have seen off Hampshire's opening bowlers when James Tomlinson made the breakthrough with 39 on the board.

Tomlinson produced a beauty which Jaffer did well to get an edge to, Adrian Aymes taking the catch behind the stumps.

Rahul Dravid joined Sehwag at the crease and the pair looked to put the Hampshire attack to the sword.

Both looked in fine form putting on 60 for the second wicket before Robin Smith turned to spin and tossed the ball to Udal.

Straight away he found some turn to make the breakthrough, bowling Sehwag off an inside edge for 41.

That brought Sachin Tendulkar to the crease, but Udal sent him back with only three to his name, Dimitri Mascarenhas taking a regulation catch at backward point.

Resuming after lunch on 106 for three, Sourav Ganguly was fortunate not to become the fourth man out with only five to his name.

He played defensively at a good length ball from Tomlinson and John Francis put down a difficult chance at short mid-wicket.

Dravid continued to look at ease at the other end and deservedly brought up his half-century.

Udal had continued to bother the Indian pair, with Ganguly becoming Udal's second victim.

With 21 to his name, he played defensively to a flighted delivery and got a thin edge through to Aymes.

Dravid's fine knock came to an end soon afterwards, Mascarenhas clean bowling him for 78.

Ajay Ratra took 18 balls to get his one before James Hamblin deservedly picked up his first wicket, lbw.

At the other end, VVS Laxman was trying to put a look of respectability on the scoreboard with some lusty blows, but Sanjay Bangar became the fourth of Udal's wickets for four, holing out to John Crawley.

Anil Kumble looked to provide some support to Laxman but, having scored eight, edged a short ball from Neil Johnson to second slip.

Johnson then turned catcher as Udal grabbed his fifth wicket, that of Laxman for 38.

Harbhajan took 14 off Johnson's next over before becoming last man out, offering a simple return catch to Tomlinson on 18.

The Hampshire reply got off to the worst possible start, Will Kendall going for a duck off the third ball, Sehwag pouching a smart catch at third slip off Bangar.

Johnson was looking good, however, and keen to get onto anything short from Bangar as he scored an unbeaten 30 off 28 balls to see Hampshire to 33 for one at the close.
