Practise 1: Massa rules in a wet Montreal
By Sam Cooper June 6 2008
The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One team have completed the first practise session for this weekends Canadian Grand Prix. Drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Lewis Hamilton took part in the one and a half hour session, ending up in 3rd and 6th best positions respectively.

Rain fell onto the circuit within the first 15 minutes of the session making it hard for all the teams to get anywhere near the dry times of the 1.15’s that you’d expect of the cars. Due to this, most drivers opted to do one installation lap, then leave their running of the day until the last half an hour of the session, times still in the mid 1.20’s.

With half an hour to go, there were very few cars on the track, the Toyota of Timo Glock and the Toro Rosso of Sebastian Vettel tired to best each others time, with the clock ticking down, with some drivers even to have not set a time yet.

Nico Rosberg was one of the faster drivers to decide to venture out onto the track with just 15 minutes to go, beating the times set before him, both Ferrari’s and Heikki Kovalainen, decided that this would be the best time to take to the track. The Ferrari’s were almost instantly quick, Kimi Raikkonen went fastest with thirteen minutes to go, with his team-mate, the two BMW’s and Heikki Kovalainen chasing him behind.

It took everyone a couple of laps to set competitive lap times, in the end it was Felipe Massa that set the pace in then closing seconds, he was followed in second by BMW’s Robert Kubica, who suffered a horrific crash in last years Canadian Grand Prix. McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen could only manage third best time in the MP4-23, who was joint fastest through the speed trap

Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW managed to get into 4th place, ahead of reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari, who was fastest out on track at one stage. Lewis Hamilton could only achieve sixth fastest time, seven tenths of a second shy of Massa’s pace, Hamilton went out with only 10 minutes to go; subsequently, he could only get 8 laps in, the only driver out there who’s lap total stayed in single figures.

The two Red Bull’s Mark Webber and David Coulthard finished the session in 7th and 8th position, with Kazuki Nakajima in the Williams finishing in an impressive 9th place, ahead of double world champion Fernando Alonso.

Many feared Ferrari’s straight line speed, though McLaren are right up with them, Heikki and Lewis were joint fastest in the speed trap along with Felipe Massa.
