Qualifying: Kovalainen 2nd, Hamilton 3rd
By Sam Cooper May 10 2008
Going into the three part qualifying session, it was harder than ever to predict who would get pole position, although Felipe Massa was clear favorite to get pole position and he did, setting a best lap time two tenths of a second faster than second placed Heikki Kovalainen and four tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton in the second McLaren.

The Ferrari’s looked to be struggling for grip with both types of tyre going into qualifying, opening the door for McLaren to snatch pole and control the race from the front of the pack, BMW looked to be in a promising position to snatch pole, which could of lead to their first win, although they didn’t have the pace to knock the Ferraris or the McLarens off the first two rows of the grid.

Turkish Grand Prix specialist Felipe Massa took pole position for the third time in a row. McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen bounced back from his horrific crash in Spain two weeks ago, he was followed to the flag by his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who decided to do his two fastest runs on the slower harder tyre.

Reigning world champion Kimi Raikkonen made a mistake on his final flying lap during the first sector, costing him valuable grid places, the Fin will start from 4th place on the dirty side of the grid, leaving him open to attack from 5th placed Robert Kubica at the start. Causing potential problems for him.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber took his strong form in the third practice session into qualifying, the Australian lines up in an impressive 6th place, a good haul of points looks to be on the cards for him. Behind him is Fernando Alonso, who was unable to repeat his fantastic qualifying performance in Spain. His teammate meanwhile finished in a disappointing 17th place.

Overall, it was a fantastic qualifying session to watch, the field was densly spread out. For McLaren, it was a lost opportunity; Lewis made a mistake with his tyre choice which cost him a better grid position. Though starting from the clean side of the grid on a slippery track won’t do Lewis any harm at all.
