Maleeva defeats Lee-Waters in Hasselt.
By Etienne Stekelenburg September 28 2004
Magdalena Maleeva the veteran from Bulgaria defeats American Lindsay Lee-Waters in two sets for a place in the second round of the Gaz de France Stars in Hasselt, Belgium. The 29-year-old from Sofia needed one hour and one minute to finish the match 6-3, 6-3.

In the first set Maleeva breaks for a 3-1 lead. She really never was in trouble, only one time in the 7th game Lee-Waters held a breakpoint but Maleeva took care of that taking a 5-2 lead.

Lindsay Lee-Waters was able to hold serve for 3-5 but could not prevent that Maleeva took the first set on her own serve 6-3.

In the second set Maleeva breaks Lee-Waters in the 5th service game for 3-2. No problems holding her own service Maggie Maleeva takes a 4-2 lead.

Lee-Waters desperately trying to hold on stepped up her game a bit, cheering herself on and grunting more with every hit. On her way to hold serve she saw Maleeva fighting back even harder and breaking her again for 5-2.

Serving for the match with new balls Maleeva saw Lee-Waters again fighting to stay in the match. This time Lee-Waters was on the better side of the score. The American hits a winner for 0-15, Maleeva hitting a double fault for 0-30. Maleeva comes back to 30 all with a good smash and a stopvolley at the net.

Maleeva needs a second serve after serving the ball into the net, the second is just not good enough and comes back as a winner. Lee-Waters holds breakpoint, again she hits a winning forehand shot breaking back Maleeva’s serve for 3-5.

Unfortunately for Lindsay Lee-Waters Maggie Maleeva feels that she did something wrong there, she steps up her game. The American is trailing 15-40 in no time and when Lee-Waters needs a second serve she gets a winner ending the match in return, 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour and 1 minute of play
