Kim Clijsters in Scottsdale final

State Farm Classic
By Etienne Stekelenburg March 1 2003
Kim Clijsters, second seed, fought herself past Meghann Shaughnessy for a place in the final of the State Farm Women’s Tennis Classic in Scottsdale Arizona on Saturday. The Belgian had to face both American Meghann Shaughnessy and the American spectators who saw Clijsters win 6-3 7-5.

The crowd clearly supported their compatriot Shaughnessy but that could not prevent Clijsters for winning the match in the end. "I like the atmosphere when the people are screaming," the second seed said. "The people are always going to go for the home favourite, like they did for me in Antwerp two weeks ago. When there's a great atmosphere like that, I play better and I think Meghann did as well."

Shaughnessy seemed to be nervous because of the support by the home crowd and showed some unforced error that led to a break and loss in the first set.

Some of the strong points of Clijsters turned out to be her serve and forehands. She also put up a good defence plan and didn’t let Shaughnessy’s dangerous groundstrokes pass her.  "She likes attack, so once she gets a second serve she's almost a metre inside the baseline and ready to hit it as hard as she can," Clijsters added. She was also attacking Shaughnessy’s serve while she didn’t seem to have a very dangerous first serve. “She is always a little careful on her first serve” Clijsters said about Shaughnessy’s serve, “and a little less careful on her second.”

In the first set Clijsters was leading 5-3 after a splitting ace and a winner and broke Shaughnessy for a 6-3 first set win. Shaughnessy throw all of her power and skills into the fray and broke Clijsters first serve in the second set when the Belgian failed to score with a crosscourt forehand.

Shaughnessy who was on her way to win the second set started to get her serve into the right spot until she was seized with nerves and fell for Clijsters crosscourt backhand and lost her service game on 5-4 which equalled the score 5-5

Clijsters held her serve to take the lead 6-5 and broke Shaughnessy’s serve again to win the match and a place in the final. Clijsters said that she had lost her focus when she was broken in the first game of the second but in the end she said she played very well to end the first set especially her movement and forehand were pretty much to her satisfaction.
