So first of all let’s address what a Fat Bloke is, I mean apart from the obvious of course. The Fat Blokes 7’s is a competition held every year at the Reading Abbey Rugby Club and organised by the club and some very hard working supporters of London Irish known as the The Flatulent Fairies who are a group who play Rugby in the humour and attitude it should be played.
Having organised the competition it is then opened to other supporters from clubs up and down the country to take part in what has become known as the premier (ahem) Sevens Tournament in the country. The team’s camp and play over a weekend in July at Reading with the winners getting a trophy and the two other awards for the best team of the worst know as the @rse trophy and the team of the tournament also being awarded. One of the teams to play every year is the team known as the mighty Worcester Wobblers
Under the guidance of Richard Cummings, our hard working team manager, we train and play under our head coach and Captain Hywel Rees. These two men organise every year the team of highly trained athletes who with a common love of rugby to some form of team. With about 6-7 weeks of training these men, and women as we now have the Wobblerettes in their second year, go to do battle in the tournament and try to be the team that drinks the bar dry.
So now the question is how successful are they? Well surprisingly the Wobblers have picked up two trophies from their time at the Fat Blokes. The first of these was the Team of the Tournament and this was followed the second year by the @rse Trophy itself. Last through a quirk of fate, and some sulking Quins, we were robbed from a second @rse Trophy by facing a team of much higher calibre than ourselves.
Over the years some teams have come along and the level of competition has heated up and this led to some serious mismatches in the competition including a bruising encounter with the Army Veterans the competition has been changed this year. The Wobblers have been placed in the same group as the Fairies and other likeminded team that includes teams as the Bristol Pasty Eaters and the Drunken Wasps. So we will have a good chance for silverware but we will have a lot of fun whatever happens.
So with only 3 weeks to go until this year’s competition the Wobblers and Wobblerettes are ready, the team has many of the contributors from this board playing in it and I will be taking some pictures and writing a little report on the weekend. If you feel like a laugh though come along to training and see how good the Wobblers really are.
