It was also the first Rovers away win for 8 MONTHS. I am so glad that we can finally say that we have wiped the slate clean now and that all the bad statistics have all but disappeared!
The game was certainly a game of two halves. It saw a very open first half where anyone could have got the opener, luckily it was The Gas that started the balls rolling, Paul Tait was the man with the cross and Shrewsbury 'keeper got a hand to it but it was Guiliano Grazioli who guided the ball home with a sweet diving header. 1-0.
The second half started off disappointingly for us Gasheads when it seemed it was the same old story when a Luke Rodgers strike somehow made it passed the embarrassed Scott Howie, the strong shot seemed to be going down Howie’s throat but the Scots man could only tip it over his head...and unfortunately the ball bounced over the line. 1-1.
Then the boys in... Orange(!) started to take control of the game. Grazioli was the man again, to convert his second of the game when he just simply side footed home from 5 yards out after some great football by the Rovers players. 2-1
Rovers' third came from a quick throwing from Trevor Challis, the ball landed at the feet of the great Vitas Astafjevs who just seemed to fly past everyone before firing home from outside the area to send the travelling faithful behind the goal into a wild frenzy! 3-1 (and it gets better!)
The next goal was the one that really put the game beyond doubt, it came from some great passing by the Gas, it fell to Wayne Carlisle who was a consistent threat down the right hand side, he played a superb cross goal which fell perfectly for super Graz to complete his hat-trick. Surely Shrewsbury couldn't come back from this...could they? 4-1
Shrewsbury managed to get a goal back however from a deep corner Luke Rodgers headed that knocked against Anwar Uddin’s knee that ended up in the back of the net. Was there to be a nervy end to this quite fantastic match? 4-2
The Pirates finished off the Shrews in great fashion when Paul Tait was put through by Quinn (I think) and he ran onto it and was one-on-one with the 'keeper and after twisting and turning he let fly a powerful shot which was in fact blocked by a defender on the line...the ball however fell to Wayne Carlisle who did some more flashy skill on the ball before rifling home the 5th for Rovers! 5-2!
Well well well, who would have thought? It was a day where everything fell into place. As always I love to mention the loyal Gasheads who have stuck by the club through all the rubbish. The fans were fantastic throughout the game, always singing and when one of your players turns around and says, "Our fans were amazing" it makes everything worthwhile to think that the players recognise our loyalty.
Sorry for the long report but come on...there was a lot to be said!
COME ON YOU BLUES!
