Player Of The Month
Wolves made one change to the team that lost to Sheffield United on Saturday, with Stephen Elliot dropping to the subs bench and Powerade Player of the Month Freddy Eastwood returning to the starting-11.
Wolves created chances in the firs half, Andy Keogh missing two gilt-edged opportunities, but the team weren’t playing well. Bryan Hughes forced Hennessey into a decent save at the opposite end, and Hull’s three-man midfield were starting to dominate, not allowing Olofinjana and Henry any space in which to play.
Hull took the lead early in the second half, forcing McCarthy to make a double change- Bothroyd and Gray replacing Keogh and Ward, who had taken a knock earlier in the game. Although Gray added another attacking threat, Wolves rarely looked like scoring. The exception to this was an excellent strike from Eastwood which cannoned back off the upright, with Boaz Myhill beaten. Myhill also made a comfortable save from a Bothroyd freekick, but aside from this, but Wolves never looked like breaking down a strong Hull defence.
Overall it was a very bitty performance. The midfield of Henry and Olofinjana didn’t work. Karl Henry played too deep, and while he may want to play like Andrea Pirlo, he isn’t good enough to be taking the ball off the centre-halves and controlling play. If he wants to be playing like an Italian midfielder, it should be Gattuso, winning the ball in midfield and giving it simply to the better players around him.
Ward and Breen failed to get to grips with Caleb Folan in the first half, and played like they were playing with each other for the first time, most notably when in the first half they left it to each other to pick up Folan as he moved through on goal.
If, as I said two days ago, last night was a ‘must win’ match, we can’t afford not to beat Norwich on Saturday. If we are to do this, we need a hugely better performance.
