Like most of the great racing drivers of our time David started his racing career at a young age, in karting. At age 12 he became Scottish Junior Kart Champion, a title which he successfully defended until 1986 when he moved into the Open Championship.

In 1989 David moved into Formula Ford racing. He took not only the Dunlop/Autosport Championship but also the P&O Ferries Junior Championship. This culminated in his receiving the prestigious McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year award.
Coulthard joined Paul Stewart Racing in 1990 to race in Formula Vauxhall Lotus and the GM Lotus Euroseries. In 1991 he moved to British Formula 3 and in 1992 drove in Formula 3000 with Paul Stewart Racing. His last full season in F3000 was in 1993, again with Paul Stewart Racing. That year he also raced for Jaguar in the GT Class of the Le Mans 24 Hour race.

In 1992 Coulthard tested for the Camel Benetton Ford F1 team. A year later in 1993 he tested for the Canon Williams Renault F1 team, in the FW15C car. As a result he became the Williams test driver for the 1994 season. He raced just once in the F3000 championship that year, gaining a 2nd place. The reason was the death of Ayrton Senna. David became the number two driver for the Williams team as a result, alongside driver Damon Hill. His first grand prix was was in Spain 1994. That year he also received the awards of Scottish Sports Personality of the Year and ITV Young Sports Personality of the Year.

In 1995 David continued with the Rothmans Williams Renault team, alongside Damon Hill. In the first race of the season he was disqulaified from his 2nd place due to fuel irregularities, but later reinstated.

In 1996 Williams hired U.S. CART Champion Jaques Villeneuve to partner Damon Hill. As a result David moved to the then somewhat ailing Marlboro McLaren-Mercedes team. He has remained there to date and is on equal status in the team with double World Champion Mika Hakkinen. David is known for his sensational grid starts, often gaining several places or maintainng his lead.

2005 will see David drive for the Red Bull Racing Team as lead driver. His experience, speed and technical ability will help bring the team forward.
