The weekend is in July 1979. The circuit is Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. It has being ten years since Frank Williams had first entered his own car with Piers Courage driving, a Brabham Ford. The Williams Team was at Silverstone with Alan Jones and Clay Regazzoni forming a strong driving partnership for the team. The 1979 season had started with the Ligers dominant, and then Ferrari had started to look strong. For the Williams Team the British Grand Prix saw the team come to the race with a new design of aerodynamic undertray. This allowed the Williams FW07 to use its "ground effect" to perfection. The design had required modifications to be made to the design of the Ford DFV engine to accommodate the new undertray. |

The Williams FW07s
were visibly quicker than the opposition. This was brought out in
qualifying where Alan Jones would set a time that was six seconds faster
than the lap record. Even the Renaults, with their powerful V6
turbocharged engines, were six tenths of a second slower than Jones.
The Williams FW07 was to prove itself as being a very affective design in the era of the "ground effect" cars. It was a car simple in design but as they say "simple is beautiful". Alan Jones would be able to use the car to win his World Drivers Championship. But at Silverstone Frank Williams was waiting to win his first race, something that was way overdue. In the race Jones was to dominate the early stages. Jabouille's Renault ran in a strong second place for 16 laps, until its tyres were cooked by the effort of staying with Jones. |

| Jones and
Regazzoni would run 1st and 2nd until in the
closing stages of the race, with 30 laps to run, Jones dived into the
pits to retire. It was found that the water pump, which had being
modified to fit the new undertray, had allowed water to leak eventually
forcing Jones to retire. Regazzoni would continue to run in 1st
place.
Clay Regazzoni went on to triumph in the race winning by 24 seconds from Rene Arnoux's Renault. Regazzoni had already the won four GP's in his Formula One career stretching back to 1970. Yet this was the first win for the Williams Team and Frank Williams. It was a win that quite rightly received congratulations from the teams, press, and fans alike. |

For
Frank this win was the culmination of ten years work stating from humble
beginnings to build his team up to the level of a very serious
competitor. After years of doing everything the hard way, he and his team,
with help from Patrick Head in the technical areas, were now moving into
the league of one of the top Formula One teams.
Jones would later go on to win the following years British Grand Prix. |
