British GP: Good result mixed with frustration for Williams

Nico finished in fith
By Andrew Hooper June 21 2009
With AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg finishing fifth in the 2009 British GP it was a good result for the team one that they must take some pleasure from. But it must have being mixed with frustration as Kazuki Nakajima would run in fourth up until the first pit stop but after this stop his race would go wrong and he would finish in a disappointing eleventh. But they have moved ahead of McLaren.

 British GP Race Review

Having seen their cars qualify in fifth and seventh the AT&T Williams team were looking forward to a good result from the sixty lap 2009 British Grand Prix. For the first time Kazuki Nakajima had out-qualified his more experienced team-mate Nico Rosberg. It was dry but overcast as the cars formed up on the grid but with the possibility of showers later in the afternoon. On the grid Kazuki spoke of how realistically he was looking for some points in the race. Sutil would start
the race from the pit lane after his car had been repaired as a result of his qualifying accident. Of the top ten Kazuki was the lightest so he would have to make use of this fact early in the race. Most drivers were starting the race on the softer Bridgestone tyre, except for the Williams drivers who were on the harder tyre.

RosbergWith Vettel leading the cars around on the parade lap he would take his place on the grid and the rest of the field would form up behind him. The lights would go out and the race would start and it would be Vettel leading from Barrichello, Webber, Kazuki, and Raikkonen. Nico would pass Trulli to take sixth. Button was in ninth. Lap one and Vettel was leading by 1.5 seconds with Kazuki in fourth and Nico sixth. Barrichello was second from Webber as Vettel set a fastest lap on lap two, 1m:22.338. Raikkonen was right behind Kazuki with Nico a further 1.3 seconds further back. Massa had run wide at Stowe allowing Button to move up to eighth. Lap three and Vettel was even faster with a 1m:21.823.

Nico had closed in onto Raikkonen while Kazuki was able to pull away from the Ferrari. Lap four and Vettel continued to extend his lead with a 1m:21.618, with Barrichello 4.4 seconds behind the leader. One of the big losers was Alonso who was down in thirteenth. Everyone's pace was improving as they put in more laps. Nico was 11.1 seconds behind the leader and was 2.5 seconds behind Kazuki. Lap six and a new fastest lap for Vettel, 1m:21.458. He was pulling out a second a lap leading now by 6.1 seconds. On lap seven another fastest lap for Vettel, 1m:21.275. Webber had closed in onto Barrichello as Vettel set another new fastest lap, 1m:21.082, to now lead by 8.2 seconds.

NakajimaKazuki was still running in fourth and Nico sixth as Vettel continued to pull away from the field. He set another fastest lap on lap nine with a 1m:20.931. Kazuki would set a personal best on lap ten, 1m:22.089. Trulli was in seventh as Vettel set another fastest lap, 1m:20.839, on lap eleven. He was now 12.2 seconds ahead of Barrichello. With such pace it was looking like he would easily take victory. Nico continued to follow Raikkonen but could not get close enough to challenge him. It must have been frustrating for the Williams driver. Lap thirteen and Vettel was fastest again with a 1m:20.821. The Williams mechanics were ready in the pit lane and Kazuki would pit from fourth on lap sixteen. There would be a small problem with the right front but it was sorted while the fuel was added. Kazuki was back out on the harder tyre.

Lap sixteen and Vettel was faster with a 1m:20.735 as Raikkonen pitted on lap seventeen. He would again take on the softer tyre and would come out in front of Kazuki. Lap nineteenth and Nico, Trulli, and Button would pit. Trulli would stay on the soft while Button changed to the hard. Barrichello would pit on lap twenty as Kazuki found himself having lost further places. Glock would pit from fifth. Barrichello took the hard while Glock continued on the soft tyre. Lap twenty
one and Webber would pit from second continuing on the soft tyre. Webber was able to come out just in front of Barrichello. Vettel would pit from the lead on lap twenty two continuing on the softer tyre. He would retain his lead of the race.

RosbergMassa was second while Fisichella had pitted from third. Heidfeld had also come in from thirteenth. After the stops Nico was in fifth and Kazuki ninth. Massa would pit on lap twenty four returning in fifth still on the softer tyre. Nico was closing in onto third placed Barrichello. Vettel was out on his own from Webber, Barrichello, Nico, Massa, Trulli, Raikkonen, Button, and Kazuki in ninth. Nico had gained from the pit stops while Kazuki must have wondered where it all went wrong having dropped way back. Lap twenty six and Nico was 1.7 seconds behind Barrichello while Kazuki was dropping away from eighth placed Button. Lap twenty eight and Bourdais would pit from fourteenth.

Webber had taken a few seconds off Vettel but Vettel was looking to conserve his tyres. Nico was now 1.5 seconds behind Barrichello while 2.3 seconds behind Button. Lap thirty and Piquet would pit from twelfth. Lap thirty and Vettel's lead was now 19.9 seconds as Vettel would lap seventeenth placed Hamilton. Nico would continue to slowly close in onto Barrichello and after lap thirty two he was 0.7 seconds behind Barrichello. Nico was told by his engineer to get past
Barrichello as on lap thirty four Kovalainen would pit from twelfth. Sutil would also come in for the first time. Barrichello was able to pull away from Nico by a few tenths as Bourdais would run into the rear of Kovalainen.

NakajimaKovalainen had moved across in front of Bourdais seeing the Torro Rosso run into the McLaren's left rear tyre. Both Bourdais and Kovalainen would pit. Massa had closed in onto Nico been 0.8 seconds behind the Williams. Vettel was still leading from Webber, Barrichello, Nico, Massa, Trulli, Raikkonen, Button, and Kazuki still in ninth. Kovalainen would pit again to retire, joined by Bourdais the next lap. Alonso would pit on lap forty from thirteenth. Nico was told that the team would do the standard front wing adjustment in his next pit stop given that he would be going onto the softer tyre at his next stop. Kazuki would pit on lap forty two as Nico still tried to find a way to close in onto Barrichello. lap forty two and the gap was just 0.8 seconds between the Brawn and the Williams. Kazuki was down in eleventh.

Lap forty three and Raikkonen would pit from eighth. He would take on the harder tyre while Nico would pit on lap forty four. Nico would take on the softer tyre for his run to the finish. Vettel would pit on lap forty five taking on the harder tyre. After having taken to the grass after making a mistake Hamilton would pit from sixteenth while at the front Webber was now leading. Massa would pit from fourth on lap forty six while Fisichella would also pit from eighth. Vettel was 9.2 seconds behind Webber while Barrichello was still in third. Nico would see Massa come out in front of him after their pit stops.

NakajimaTrulli would pit from fifth on lap forty seven. Lap forty eight and Webber and Barrichello would both pit seeing Vettel return to the lead of the race. Webber was second from Button, who was yet to pit, with Barrichello fourth. Massa was in fifth followed by Nico, Glock, Trulli, Raikkonen, Fisichella, and Kazuki in eleventh. Button would pit from third on lap fifty returning in sixth place. Nico was now fifth 1.1 seconds behind Massa. Button was been told that Massa and Nico were struggling on their tyres as the Brawn driver continued to close into onto the Williams. Lap fifty three and Button was now 4.9 seconds behind Nico. Lap fifty four and Button was now 2.5 seconds behind Nico having set a personal best.

Nico was struggling on the softer tyre with five laps remaining. Button would close to now be 1.4 seconds behind Nico while at the front Vettel continued to lead from Webber and Barrichello. Nico was under attack from Button with three laps left. It was now 0.8 seconds between Button and Nico and on lap fifty eight Button lowered it to 0.5 seconds. Kazuki was still in eleventh while team-
mate Nico continued to keep Button behind him. Vettel would start his final lap as Nico continued to hold Button behind him. Vettel would take the chequered flag to win the British Grand Prix with Webber second from Barrichello. Massa would finish in fourth followed by Nico, Button, Trulli, and the last point went to Raikkonen.

The Williams team could take some pleasure to see Nico score four points from his fifth place. But there also must be a large amount of frustration to see Kazuki finish down in eleventh after having started ahead of and up until the first stop had run ahead of Nico. Kazuki's race went all wrong after his first pit stop and the team will have to look long and hard as to why things went wrong.
