British Practice Three: Williams One-Two

Nico Rosberg
By Andrew Hooper June 20 2009
It would be a Williams one-two after the final practice session for the 2009 British GP. Nico Rosberg would lead Kazuki Nakajima with both drivers setting their times in the closing moments of the sesssion. A great job prior to qualifying but it would all come down to what fuel the pair were running. Even so to set a time in the one minute eighteen seconds is a very quick time around Silverstone.

 British GP Saturday Practice

With clouds over the circuit the final practice session for the 2009 British Grand Prix would see the usual parade of the drivers completing their installation laps. AT&T Williams team driver Nico Rosberg would complete two laps in which to check his systems. With overnight rain there was damp patches on the track as Buemi had not left his pit with a hydraulic issue. Vettel would come out
running on intermediate tyres returning to the pits after one lap. With fifteen minutes completed the track was now empty but a few minutes later Massa was out on the track running on the intermediate tyre. Kubica would join him but would pit after one lap. Piquet was next out with under forty minutes left in the session and would be the first to set a time with a 1m:28.756.

RosbergHeidfeld was next out as Piquet lowered his time with a 1m:25.989. His next lap was a 1m:25.212 as Heidfeld went second with a 1m:33.668. Piquet would improve with a 1m:23.852 while Nico was now out on the track. He was joined by Kazuki, Bourdais, and Glock. The track was still damp in places while Nico would complete several laps setting a time of 1m:25.663. Kazuki was in third with a 1m:26.461. Nico would improve his pace setting a time of 1m:23.835 to go fastest in front of Piquet.

Kazuki was third followed by Bourdais, Glock, and Heidfeld. As more drivers took to the track Nico would set a time of 1m:22.268 to remain fastest while Bourdais was second, 1m:23.307, followed by Kazuki, Piquet, and Glock. Nico would continue to improve his time setting a time of 1m:21.375. Behind him Glock had moved up to second followed by Massa, Kazuki, Webber, and Hamilton. Again Nico would improve with twenty one minutes remaining. His time was a 1m:20.974 as Massa moved up to second with a 1m:21.296. Nico's pace continued to improve setting a 1m:20.655. Raikkonen was in seventh while Alonso had moved up to second, 1m:21.030. Kazuki was on a quick lap with twenty minutes remaining setting a time of 1m:21.060. It would be Massa who would move ahead of Nico with a 1m:20.601.

Webber was next to go fastest with a 1m:20.571 but Kazuki would move ahead of him with a 1m:20.256. The times were all changing rapidly with Button now second, 1m:20.484. Webber was third, 1m:20.571, followed by Massa, Nico, Hamilton, Alonso, Glock, Trulli, and Fisichella in tenth. With just over fifteen minutes remaining both Williams drivers would pit and Trulli would move ahead of Kazuki with a 1m:20.087. Vettel was now third, 1m:20.304, while Trulli was looking to improve his time but would pit joining the majority of the field. Vettel was on a quick lap setting a time of 1m:19.983 to go fastest. Button was on the track currently in fourth. Vettel would improve with a 1m:19.809 as he was the only driver on the track.

Vettel would have a moment going into Club corner seeing him nearly lose it but was able to continue and return to the pits. With under ten minutes left in the session several drivers had returned to the track including Massa, Hamilton, Glock, Kovalainen, Bourdais, and Buemi. Raikkonen was also out on the track as the drivers started their runs on the softer tyres. Massa would move up to second, 1m:20.055 but he was beaten by Glock. Kazuki and Nico were both back out as Buemi set a time of 1m:22.024. With six minutes left most of the field were back out as Massa went fastest with a 1m:19.596. Vettel was now second from Glock, Hamilton, Trulli, Raikkonen, Kazuki, Button, Bourdais, and Webber.

Everyone was now on the track with four and a half minutes remaining. Nico was currently in eleventh and Kazuki seventh. Buemi would improve to be fifteenth. Trulli was now fastest with a 1m:19.471. Kazuki would improve to be second, 1m:19.545, but Nico would move ahead of him with a 1m:19.489. Trulli was going quicker still setting a time of 1m:19.125 so it was Trulli from Nico, Kazuki, Massa, Vettel, Raikkonen, Glock, Alonso, Barrichello, and Hamilton. Kazuki was on a quick lap going fastest in the middle sector. He would improve to set the fastest time with a 1m:19.102 but Nico would move ahead with a 1m:18.899.

The session would end with the Williams pair in a one-two. Trulli was third from Vettel, Massa, Raikkonen, Glock, Alonso, Webber, and Barrichello in tenth. A great job in the lead-up qualifying from the Williams drivers but it would all come down to what level of fuel the pair were running on. Despite this to set a time in the one minute eighteen seconds is a very quick time around the Silverstone circuit.
