AT&T Williams Team Reactions - Qualifying

 Reactions: British GP Qualifying
AT&T Williams had a difficult qualifying session for Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone today. Having suffered with an unresolved suspension issue all weekend, Nico Rosberg was forced out of Q1 in P18. Kazuki Nakajima fared only slightly better making it into Q2 but was restricted to P15, the conclusion of a lack of grip and an underperforming car.
Nico Rosberg:
Nico Rosberg"I’ve had a problem with my suspension all weekend which is making the car really hard to drive in the corners because it just jumps around all over the place. We’ve obviously been trying to find a solution throughout the sessions but, so far, nothing has worked. The race is going to be very tough."
Kazuki Nakajima:
Nakajima"Obviously it was a very hard qualifying session for us. I made it through to Q2, but was struggling with grip, and the difference between our times and those of the other team’s is quite significant. We need to find something from the car, and from me, and we will need to do a lot of work tonight to make sure we have the best strategy in place for the race."
Sam Michael Technical Director WilliamsF1
Sam Michael"We had a malfunction in the suspension system of Nico’s car which prevented him from improving his lap time. We will correct it for tomorrow by changing parts. Kazuki did not have the same problem, but our car is clearly not working well at Silverstone and his grid position is the result. This does not represent the capability of the AT&T Williams team, and we must work to do rectify that."

I do hate it. There is a clear problem there somewhere. I just wish that someone would put their finger on it and sort it out so that we can make some progress.

Williams and proud of it.

Does that incur a penalty if you work on the car? I thought you can't work on the cars overnight

You can work to fix parts i think, you cant change anything from your setup, if im right.

Btw they will try to fix the suspension in one night, which they couldnt fix it in 2 days WTF?

If there is a broken or worn part, a request can be made to the stewards to change it.

Williams and proud of it.

.... but given they (apparently) dont know what the problem is, how can they argue what's damaged or worn?

They rebuilt the suspension once already and that did not solve the problem in fact it got worse so how are they going to tell the stweards what the problem is

Sam has indicated that they do know what the problem is.

All teams can strip down their gearboxes tonight if they get permission from the race stewards. All that a team has to do is say that they feel that a gear is worn. It is the same with a suspension component. An excessive amount of lateral movement is enough for a component to be changed.

Williams and proud of it.

It is a concern that they do not know what the problem was, especially if they believe they already fixed it.I understand not being able to identify the problem during practice/qualifying, but in between these periods are when they should be able to identify the cause without a problem.

I can not understand Nico's comments when he said that they have had the problem with his car the whole weekend. If so how was he able to finish fourth in the second Friday practice. Odd

a very good point andrew... something is not quite right here and i'm sure that if a 'malfunction' occurred then it must have been measurable!!!
the other point is that apart from actual settings which are tailored to the individual driver what could possibly be the cause if the two cars are identical in composition/parts?
this is classical sam michaelspeak, reminiscient of the fateful 06 season, "we know where the problem is and we'll fix it", not.
lastly i didn't hear of any dramas with nakajimas car and he has done a good job, again, in the circumstances.

Plus, if they have had problems all weekend, why did nico say they have made good progress since the test and practice was good. Was the team in denial or just not revealing problems.

Sam michael suddenly says parts will be changed so the problem is fixed, but why wasnt it done earlier?
