Eurowatch 30 December

48 pts for Wakarua
By Jason Harris December 30 2006
While the Super 10 and Top 14 teams played just one game in the run-up to the festive period following Rounds 3 and 4 in Europe, the Magners League had been in full flow with Glasgow playing two Friday night fixtures; the first at Hughenden against Edinburgh, the second at Netherdale against Borders
Glasgow's early Christmas present came at Hughenden on 22 December as they beat Edinburgh 34-27, with Dan Parks contributing 24 points from a try, two conversions, three penalties and two drop goals with the other points coming courtesy of tries by Dan Turner and Andy Henderson.

Last Friday, Warriors sneaked home 20-19 at Netherdale against Border Reivers. Wing Hefin O'Hare and replacement Colin Gregor scored the tries, while Parks added two penalty goals and both conversions; the second of which was late in injury time and won Glasgow the match.

The Warriors are now up to seventh in the Magners League table, but there is still plenty of action to take place over the new year holiday before the dust settles and everyone will know where they stand.

Glasgow's final game before the conclusion of the European Challenge Cup pool stages will be at home against table-topping Ulster on Saturday 6 January, a game that can be seen live (if you are a subscriber) on Setanta Sports 1, Sky Digital Channel 429. The programme, which also features Leinster v Ospreys, starts at 5pm.

Following back-to-back defeats to Glasgow and a home reverse against Perpignan, Narbonne's woes continued as they left Paris empty handed after a five try, 41-0 thumping fron league leaders Stade Francais.

That result, along with Albi's win 19-3 over Brive, means that Narbonne slip to 12th place in the table on 30 points after 17 Rounds, just two ahead of next opponents Montpellier and three ahead of rock-bottom Bayonne, who picked up a losing bonus after running Perpignan close away from home, going down 36-30. Things will be tough for RCNM as Montpellier beat them 33-10 in the corresponding fixture in Montpellier in Round 5 back in September.

That round 18 game at Parc des Sports et L'Amitie next Saturday will be Narbonne's final one before coming to Vicarage Road eight days later to take on Sarries.

Over in Italy, GRAN Parma celebrated the arrival of their new main sponsor Rolly (www.rollybrush.com) with a big 58-20 win over Rome-based side Almaviva Capitolina at Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi,in a match which turned out to be the Rima Wakarua Show.

The Italian internatioanl fullback ran in four tries, booted five conversions and six penalty goals for a colossal personal haul of 48 points, a club record. (Eat your heart out, Glen Jackson.) GRAN's other tries came from wings Jason Tiatia and Massimo Ravazzolo.

After Overmach lost 17-9 away at Calvisano, GRAN are back above their neighbours at the half way point of the Super 10 season in fifth place, on 23 points with Overmach just behind on 21.

GRAN will hope to improve on their points tally at Rovigo on Saturday as their opponents lie in ninth place with just one win from their nine games; however the game in Parma back in Round 1 was a close one, with GRAN coming out 23-17 winners. Then it's a home game against Glasgow before the GRAN Challenge Cup campaign closes with a trip to Narbonne.
