With many first-choice players resting or recuperating it will be down to the old stagers and the young guns to ensure that this does not degenerate into a repeat of the infamous ‘Tour from Hell’.
With Harry Ellis out of the picture and England suffering from a dearth of half-backs, step forward Scott Bemand.
Had the England call-up not come, the 2005/06 season would probably have been a memorable one for all the wrong reasons. In pre-season training he suffered an ankle injury that would see him pinned, plastered and sidelined for much of the season. Happily, he recovered in time to provide some serious competition for Harry and Oz for the Number 9 shirt, although his first team return match on 27 December at Bristol was probably the worst Tigers result of the season. But the high point of the domestic season must have been to lead the Tigers side in the A League final against his old club, Harlequins. Scott has the distinction of being the only player to win the A League three times on the trot!
Name: Scott Bemand.
Born: 21 September 1978 Hereford.
Junior Club: Luctonians
Representative Honours: England Students, England Colts
Previous Clubs: Moseley, NEC Harlequins, Bristol (On Loan)
Scott joined Harlequins from Moseley in 2001, scoring a try on his Premiership debut against Bristol on 8 September of that year. In the 2003/04 season he returned to a First Division Bristol for a month’s loan, but made just three appearances before opting to return to Quins. At the end of that season, Tigers were looking for a replacement for the departing Tom Tierney and Scott fitted the bill. Seen by many as the understudy, until his unfortunate injury, Scott had been pushing hard and capitalised on any dip in Harry’s form. Back to his best, he now has the ideal opportunity to demonstrate that he has made the transition from journeyman player to England contender.
At the time of posting he's not featured in the first test but fingers crossed for the rest of the tour Inky
