What are the rules again?
By BigTiger July 14 2002
Having lived in Leicester from the age of 2, football was first choice, I can just remember many years ago when Tigers went unbeaten for a long time, but I found rugby boring.
We lived in Evington and I went to Spencefield School. All the lads looked in envy at the City of Leicester Boys School, they had football goals on their playing field we had stupid Rugby Posts.

I can remember, playing for our school house team, which was Beacon. We had 4 houses in the school named after the 4 hills around Leicester. Beacon, Bardon, Borough and Breedon. We all had to take part in something on sports day and because I am not built like Linford Christy I was chosen for the rugby team.

My position- Prop. I hadn’t a clue what the rules were and often got blown up for something I had no idea about. I can only ever remember scoring one try and also having the slipper for tripping a winger up; I was last in defence and no way was I going to tackle him!

After playing for my house I had a transfer to the school team still not having any idea about the rules. (This remains with me to this day!)

Leaving School my family moved up north leaving “liddle old me” to fend for myself down here. I lodged with a family out at Great Dalby near Melton. My landlord was a keem rugby fan and he invited me one day to go and watch Tigers. What a wonderful day a winning team, you could go anywhere in the ground, and we had a great deal of banter.

Saturday afternoons from then on were never the same and gradually I became hooked. I had my first season ticket some 20 yrs ago and have had one ever since. I loved getting there early to get the best seats and sitting next to opposing supporters. In the end there were 20 or so of us going from the Melton area and we had great Saturday afternoons.

Although many of us still go, because of seat numbering we are all split up, but there is still a group of us together and those around us now, will know me as the refs assistant in the Members stand.

My 2 boys, 10 and 12, love going and I have no problem letting them go and watch the players come out. Then they run back around to their seats. Although things are changing I still think that it is one of the best family sports and safe to let the kids walk around. The highlight is if Tigerman throws Rugby balls into the crowd and they get one.

Both boys have gone from the age of 1. My wife sometimes has to work or go on call at weekends, so dad got left holding the baby. If dad went to rugby they would come too.

I would watch the Tigers even if they lost on a regular basis and I think the lads would too, although it does help when you have a team as good as Leicester. Rugby is favourite but I must admit I like any sport.

I think my worst moment was watching Barf get the penalty try in the last minute at Twickers. Best moment apart from the finals we have won was standing down in the corner near the end of the Glos match when Freddie went over to give us the win.

My lads still remember me turning round to all the Glos fans that were sitting down there and just clenching my fist. From what I remember the crowd went mad. What a match!
