Adding A Link: A Walk Through For The Technically Challenged
This has been written for those who rarely use a computer or have just started. It is very easy to use jargon, but to the casual user, it may as well be in a foreign language. If you find a story that you think would be of interest, either about Tigers or rugby in general, you can insert a link to that on the message board.
Please Note – it is easy to copy the story to the clipboard and paste it into a blank message, but this is not allowed due to copyright laws. All “cut&paste”’d stories will be deleted on this site. DO NOT COPY & PASTE ANYTHING that does not belong to you.
There are two aims when adding a link:
Ø To tell the site software where to find the story
Ø To tell people reading the link what they are going to see
First you need to go to the web page that you want to tell us all about.
In the window at the top of the screen is a box called “Address”, then a long jumble of letters and/or numbers which starts with the letters http:// . This is also known as the URL, and is the unique address for whatever the page is that you are looking at.
If you move the mouse pointer to the end of this line, press and hold down the left mouse button and swipe over the address: it will now look something like http:// . Keep the pointer on the address and press the right mouse button. A new window opens , and you should click on the “Copy” command. This has copied the address to the clipboard so that you can paste it later.
Go to theleicestertigers.co.uk, sign in and go to the bit where you add you comments on the message board. The area above the blank space looks like this….
Add a link Add an email link Add an Image
Bold text Underlined Text Italic Text
Center Text Quote Text
Click on the Add a link and a load of stuff appears in the text box
Your text
This is made up of two parts: the contains the bit that you paste your copied address into. Left click and hold he button down and swipe the bit that says
http://YOUR-LINK.com - DO NOT GO OVER THE SQUARE BRACKET ON THE END.
Now, still pointing at this text, right click the mouse and choose the Paste command – this has added the link.
All that remains for you to do is to replace the Your text bit with whatever description you like! Again, swipe while holding down the left mouse button then just type.
So, for example, you have seen an interesting story on a site called hooya.co.uk. The address may say something like http://www.hooya.co.uk/odd_balls.txt
After you have copied and pasted this address, and changed the Your text bit with the words An interesting story
What you and up with is An interesting story .
Once you have finished, click the Post button, and all you see when you check your posting is "An interesting story" and that is it – link added and clicking it will take you to the original story web page.
