My family have always been keen rugby followers - my uncle played for South Leicester for many years.
My father and I never went to any Tigers matches, being content with watching 5 nations games, Rugby Special, and the occasional game at South Leicester, that is, until the fateful day that someone offered my father a ticket for the Pilkington Cup Final - Tigers Vs Harlequins, 1993.
History records that Tigers won a great victory that day, and my Father returned from HQ announcing that he was going to get a season ticket for the 1993/94 season.
Being less organised than him, I didn't get round to applying for a season ticket, but was keen to accompany him to games, in the company of some of his friends - so it was, at the tender age of 19, that Gaz graced the Crumbie Terrace for the first time. I can still remember that game - Tigers Vs Orrell.
In the early days, my sister attended some games (mostly to watch Neil Back), but mostly it was me & my Father, along with the rest of the gang.
Our first away trip was in the Pilkington Cup later that season - Tigers Vs Blackheath, to be followed by many more over the next few seasons. Thanks to Tigers winning ways, I was able to follow in my Father's footsteps by attending a Cup Final at Twickers at the end of the season - it would be 3 more years before I was able to enjoy a Tigers win though.
The following season, I got my act together enough to apply for my own season ticket, and from there have never looked back. - I still take my place on the Crumbie Terrace, along with the rest of the gang, and still try to get to a few away trips each year.
Looking back, there has been many ups and downs over the years - losing 2 cup finals, both to Bath (thanks Mr Lander), losing the HC final at Cardiff, winning the cup against Sale - great to get the win, but not the best match I ever saw.
The highlight, however, was the trip to Paris in May 2001 - 20,000 Tigers fans (even Mrs Gaz came along - the promise of a weekend in Paris was enough to convince her to watch a match) what a game, what a team, what a weekend!
Well, I could write many, many pages about my experiences following the Tigers over the years - had some great times watching the sport, and the team we all love.
So, now you know who I am, & where I came from. But where am I going, ah well, that's for the next chapter!!
