Well here we are about to begin the second half of the Premiership fixtures with the return against Wasps at Headingley. Did anyone forecast we would be third with just two losses under our belt - certainly not the pundits, not even Phil Davies.

It has been a remarkable performance by the squad with the newer players all settling in and making big contributions, and the older hands gaining in confidence and experience.

Our squad this year was trimmed and some have said it can look threadbare at times, particulalry because of the long term absences of Benton and Mayer, the departure of Mulder, and injuries to our cover props. However, the last three games in particular have tested the depth and resilience of the squad and it has not been found wanting. Six points from games against Saints, Gloucester and Wasps away is a 100% improvement from last year and big contributions have been made by players like James Ponton, Rob Rawlinson, Matt Holt and Chris Hall, and Tristan Davies filling in at fly-half.

With the internationals out of the way we should see the return of Gordon Ross, Mark Regan and Diego Albanese. Dan Scarbrough's shoulder knock has apparently cleared up, but George Harder is likely to be missing due to a sternum injury. Wasps should see the return of Lawrence Dallaglio.

Whatever should we make of Wasps ? Their squad is full of well known names, they have pace at the back, and beef up front. Last year and this they were expected to challenge at the top of the league but they continue as the proverbial curate's egg team. They can beat Gloucester (we didn't) and shade Tigers in a tight game but they can also frustrate their fans with inconsistent application over 80 minutes and end up drawing or losing games they might have otherwise won.

As for the Tykes now we have gained respect we are looking for a return to the sort of performance that we put in against Tigers. We know that we have a backline which at full strength can test the best and we want to see some teams put to the sword at home. We must however beware of Wasps who will be looking to kickstart the second half of their season and who we know can play good rugby.

Lastly both sets of supporters have put on their Christmas list the wish to see a referee who acts understandably and consistently throughout a game. Welcome Wasps and game on.
