Leeds Lardy Ladies Recruiting!

Is this you? Call Us!!
By Andy Brown June 19 2008
June the 19th is the day of writing this piece. There is exactly one calendar month between now and the day of destiny that is the 2008 International Fat Bloke Sevens tournament, where lithe, athletic, talented and hugely be-muscled specimens of male loveliness are definitely not welcome at Reading Abbey RFC.

It is the date when all of us who think we know how the game of rugby should be played are asked to put up, shut up, or just disappear off to the bar. A cracking weekend away with like-minded rugby folk who are out to have a good time, and there’s a certain amount of running around a rugby pitch to while away the time between bacony breakfast, burgery lunch and curry-y tea. And beer. Lots and lots of beer.

This year, as with the previous two, there is the chance for the laydeez to have a jog about as well, as the sister (and I use that term advisedly) tournament the Fat Birds Sevens goes into it’s third year. And for the second time in as many years, the Leeds Lardy Ladies are in the draw.

But there’s a snaggette. We have raised a team of likely lasses to bring home victory (after all, the blokes most certainly won’t!), but due to sickness, injury (not rugby related) and the sheer bad manners of summer pregnancy, we are a few numbers short of a full squad.

We need volunteers to come and be a part of the merry festival. Perhaps you have always fancied having a go but were afraid you wouldn’t be good enough at it? (Don’t worry, the standard is really, really low!). Perhaps you’re coming to Reading anyway, your husband, lover or both are bringing you to the tournament. With nothing else to do (Abbey really is a long way from civilisation!) why not join in? There’s still time for some quality coaching from the top combination of Tim “I told Leicester No” Fitzpatrick as Director of Rugby, and Andy “Which way are we playing now?” Brown as attack, defence and sitting-on-the-sidelines-barfing coach, there is a winning combination to get you gals to the top of the rugby sevens tree in no time at all.

Meet us every Wednesday at West Park Leeds RFC, 7.30pm – 9.00pm for some fun, light running, a few tips on safe tackling, and then all retire to the bar to ensure no calorie loss is evident.

Tim has promised the organisers we’ll field a Ladies team. Don’t make him a liar!!!

Re: Leeds Lardy Ladies Recruiting!
Dear lovely leeds ladies
please don't worry about numbers - we can't wait to see you again and there will be plenty of mercenary ladies who will be willing to pull on a leeds shirt and play for you (if i'm not mistaken, i did so myself last year though won't be this year i'm afraid as i'm another rude summer pregnancy!)

So worry not and come join the fun regardless!

love
elsie
