EDF Cup: Bristol 13 Leeds Carnegie 13

Try Scorer
By Chris Oakley December 3 2007
There was only ever going to be one winner here and that was the weather, the game was played in gale force winds, driving rain and freezing temperatures. Bristol kicked off with the wind at their backs and Leeds were on the back foot for the first 30 minutes, defending bravely as Bristol launched wave after wave of driving mauls.

Leeds found it difficult to clear their lines with any attempt to kick only ending up behind the kicker, such was the force of the wind. The lineouts and scrums worked really well and frustrated Bristol, eventually a missed tackle in midfield resulted in Bristols David Blaney sliding over for a try with Jason Strange converting.

Soon after the try Bristol were down to 14 men and that helped Leeds spend some time in the Bristol half with Brookes kicking and missing a fairly straightforward penalty during the sinbinning. Leeds continued to defend with Oakley, Schusterman and Lund tackling anything that moved with Oakley having to visit the Blood Bin on 4 occassions with a deep head wound. Just on half time a penalty conceded by Leeds for hands in the ruck gave a simple penalty for Bistol to take the lead 10-3

With the wind at their backs in the second half Leeds spent most of the time in the Bristol half and at the first lineout Oakley was pulled down in the lineout and Brookes kicked the penalty. Now it was all Leeds the pack making surge after surge at the Bristol try line. Finally after 46mins Lund together with the rest of pack forced themselves over for a try which Brookes converted. Follwing a raft of substitutions by both sides, Bristol finally had their chance to get into the Leeds half following a poor kick out of defence, an offside decision gave Bristol a penalty which Jason Strange converted.

For the last 20 mintes it was all Leeds, they spent most of the time in the Bristol 22 driving at the Bristo defence and also tried a few croosfield kicks to the wingers but all to no avail somehow Bristol held on and it was they and not Leeds who breathed a sigh of relief.

The players that stood out for me were Oakley and Schusterman for the numerous tackles they made, Brookes and Goodridge who especially in the first half used the conditions intelligently but the player who really stood out for me was Eric Lund.

Other things you might want to know is the scrum stood up, the lineout used many more variations with Bouza, Oakley and Lund succesfully winning ball and Schusterman sweeping up at the back and our defence was superb and very brave - I bet they are all tired and sore as they travel back to Leeds. Unfortunately this wasn't a day for our backs to run but they too tackled all day

Thanks for the interesting report. Listened to the match via radio Bristol who again were rubbish at relating what was happening on the pitch. We were however told when it started and stopped raining. Our line out did seem to function better, was this down to throwing, or did we throw short to counter the windy conditions? We seemed a trifle unlucky not to sneek a win.

The Guardian said we won all our lineouts and stole 5 of Bristol's. Sounds good to me.

The lineout was really good whoever the caller was used lots of different variations, I don't recall losing one lineout.I doubt if the wind had a bearing because even throws to the back were won or swept up by Schusterman.

I went to the game and got drenched, never mind. This was the best I had seen the lineout and the pack in general were awesome. Bristol did have about the same number of stars as we did out on the pitch. Leeds were unlucky as said before they got held up over the line with five minutes to go. Mr Rowden had a poor game for both sides and was not helped at all with his touch judges. All in all Leeds should have won but they are getting better. We will stay up if we carry on going in the right direction. I think we need someone in the centres to make that running angle. We have no one.

BRING BACK TERRY THE TYKE!!!

The whole pack played well but this was a forward battle,if the conditions had allowed for a more open and running game it is difficult to say if the result would have been the same, anyway a draw against a premier side away from home is a big step in the right direction and having an affinity with both teams I have to say Leeds were the better side and should have won.

Not entirely convinced Terry would be the answer to the issue in the centres. But let's have him back anyway.(Sm101)

On the Bristol site one of the posters made Brookes MOM, although I chose Lund, Brookes did play well and gives Lanny more options.

Thanks for the report d27. I thought Lund played pretty well against Leicester too, particularly in the first half.

He never once put a foot wrong DRG whether it was tackling, ball carrying or lineout jumping, if he carries on that like a few premier sides will take note, SUPERB

Totally agree when it comes to big Erik Lund being MOM. He ran the pack well.

BRING BACK TERRY THE TYKE!!!

Also I think he may make a differenece being the Captain as I think Stu has had his go. Two yellows and no real direction from him have proved that give Big Erik a chance Lanny.
